Justin Waugh’s stripe paintings explore color and structure in a regulated manner focusing on a single color per painting, introducing various shades from a non- sequential approach in a cohesive way, both within the individual painting and the body of work as a whole. Black lines divide each band and distress the edges of the smooth colors, which act as a place for your eye to reset before continuing to the next band, furthermore the black lines create a crisp texture exposing the black under painting that results in the viewer taking a closer look at the details of what at first glance appeared to be a minimalist study of a single color.
“Color, and its endless mutability, is fascinating. It’s really important to people. I’m interested in a systemic exploration of the way colors relate to one another and to ourselves, and our perception of what color is and what it means to us.”
